A short individual time trial running flat for the first 6 km, and then rising steeply for the following 2 km. The stage is played out on wide and mostly straight city streets, up to the foot of the San Luca climb. The 2. The stage is wavy since the start. The stage is wavy in the first part, but the route levels out perfectly from there on, with just a few minor undulations over the last 50 km, so the first sprint finish will be up for grabs in Orbetello. The stage is wavy in the first part, with constant undulations further on, until the finish. The route initially rolls past some iconic locations of the Maremma, such as Manciano and Pitigliano, and then cuts across the Tuscia and the Rome countryside, heading for a fast-running finish in Frascati, on a mild uphill gradient.
The race started with an individual time trial in Bologna , and finished with another time-trial in Verona. The team classification was won by Movistar Team. Because of an agreement between RCS Sport and the organisers of the Coppa Italia di ciclismo the Italian Road Cycling Cup one of the four wildcards is traditionally reserved for the overall cup winner. One of the wildcards was therefore awarded to Androni Giocattoli—Sidermec. All of the wildcard teams had previously participated in the Giro, and three out of the four teams participated in the previous year. The one exception was Nippo-Vini Fantini, whose last participation in the Giro was in
Like the other Grand Tours, the modern editions of the Giro d'Italia normally consist of 21 day-long segments stages over a 23 or 24 day period that includes two or three rest days. The rider with the lowest aggregate time is the leader of the general classification and wears the pink jersey. While the general classification gathers the most attention, stages wins are prestigious of themselves, and there are other contests held within the Giro: the points classification , the mountains classification for the climbers, young rider classification for the riders under the age of 25, and the team classification. The idea of the holding a bicycle race that navigated around Italy was first suggested when La Gazzetta dello Sport editor Tullo Morgagni sent a telegram to both the paper's owner, Emilio Costamagna, and cycling editor, Armando Cougnet, stating the need for an Italian tour. Since the organizers lacked the funds, 25, lire , needed to hold the race, they consulted Primo Bongrani, an accountant at the bank Cassa di Risparmio and friend of the three organizers. Bongrani proceeded to go around Italy asking for donations to help hold the race.
The 6th stage of the Giro d'Italia amounts to kilometres, while a section with demanding climbs ends 15 kilometres before the line. Day for the breakaway! The first kilometres are played out on fast terrain with no major climbs. Perfect for the breakaway to open up a wide gap. Obviously, another scenario is that the team with the pink jersey will take the reins. If so, a handful of resilient all-rounders who can excel at climbing and sprinting could come to the fore. Or, yet another option, a late attacker powers to the win with a well-timed effort.
