Toto is a fictional dog in L. Frank Baum 's Oz series of children's books, and works derived from them. His name is pronounced with a long "O", a homophone of "toe toe". He was originally a small terrier drawn by W. Denslow for the first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz The breed is cairn terrier.

Born during the Great Depression, her first ever film appearance was in Ready for Love. Owned by Hollywood dog trainer Carl Spitz, Terry was cast as Toto in part due to her previous experience on screen; she could easily follow the instruction given to her by Spitz while filming took place. He used silent hand signals to direct her. Her exquisite training also meant that she could do her own stunts.
Toto properly pronounced Toe-Toe is a fictional dog created by L. Frank Baum , author and creator of the Oz legacy. He serves strictly as an animal sidekick who makes his debut appearance in Baum's first Oz book titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , published in , and is introduced in the first chapter of the novel titled The Cyclone. Toto is the beloved pet dog and loyal companion of Dorothy Gale , the book's main heroine and child protagonist. He lived with his owner Dorothy who was an adolescent orphan raised by her two guardians; Aunt Em and Uncle Henry , on a small and poverty stricken farm upon the sunbaked Kansas prairies in circa Toto was Dorothy's only friend and sole source of happiness and he would play with Dorothy all day, everyday, and keep her company on the lonely, isolated farmland. Because of his friendly and energetic nature, Toto stopped his little mistress from sharing the same bleak fates as the adults in her life who are described as being joyless and "gray".

That is, until The Wizard of Oz became so popular that almost everyone forgot what her original name was! Like all the other cast members, she had a character name, Toto, and a real name: Terry. She may have been the best actor on the set, too, because without even the benefit of makeup or a costume, the girl dog played a boy dog.

Terry, born in the midst of the Great Depression , was trained and owned by Carl Spitz. She spent two weeks recuperating at Judy Garland 's residence, and Garland developed a close attachment to her. Garland wanted to adopt her, but Spitz refused.
