The image of a wise old martial arts master, patiently imparting his wisdom in a calm, respectful manner to worthy students who seek him out in his modest dwellings, is a fantasy common to the Western mindset, or at least to my personal childhood mindset. On the mats of Baan Chang Thai, however, my fantasy of learning from an old Muay Thai master in a tranquil gym shaded by a small grove of trees looks like it's coming true. Kru Lek, a fine artist and experienced teacher of Muay Thai Chaiya, a predecessor of modern Muay Thai, stands before us and extols the virtues of his chosen martial art. Through his interpreter, he tells us that Muay Thai Chaiya is the real martial art of Muay Thai, different from the sport version performed in the ring today. But that's sport-fighting.
Since it is a competition-based sport, there are, as in every other sport, fixed rules to follow. Muay Thai is often classified as a traditional fighting style, which is also true on one side. The Sports Muay Thai developed from the traditional Muay Boran, which has been used for centuries by the Siamese warriors as a weaponless defense technique. In the late 18th century the Siamese warrior Nai Khanomtom was captured by the Burmese king. At an event Nai Khanomtom had to fight several Burmese warriors and he was able to defeat all his opponents. He was given freedom by the Burmese king, while proving that Muay Boran is an extremely effective fighting style.
Muay Thai Chaiya is an old style of Muay Thai, with its roots based on the battlefields of ancient Thailand. An effective form of self defense, Muay Chaiya is a full martial art with a level of detail not to be found in the popular modern Muay Thai sport. Muay Chaiya is taught differently from modern muay thai, with more emphasis on technique and form instead of the concentration on pure body conditioning although this is important for any serious fighters. The classes include challenging exercises that help the student practice key movements that are used within the style. Muay Chaiya can be learnt by people of all ages, both men and women, for exercise, self-defense and competitive fighting. These are the same weapons that can be found in many martial arts, and similarly, Muay Chaiya has a underlying systems that trains the practitioner to have a strong foundation of techniques.

It is important to explain that the aim of the School is not to promote any particular style of martial arts or to protect the martial arts heritage of any country. In the Muay Sangha School the skills that we teach are used to help humankind regardless of nationality, race or religion. The skills don't belong to anyone, to any country or to any association. Muay Sangha uses what is useful in the present day and gets rid of what is not.
