A very popular artist still in the 's, Angelo Branduardi can be somehow considered a progressive artist due to his great love for folk and classical music, that have always inspired his music. During his long career he's always been very coherent with his style and never fell into commercial productions. The eponymous first album, from , can be the most appealing for prog fans, but the great success came with Alla fiera dell'est , his first on Polydor , in Both the single and the LP were top hits in Italy, and also gave the artist a great notoriety in other european countries, like in Germany and France where most of his albums have been issued, often in different versions than the originals, and Branduardi constantly toured. Combining traditional folk tunes often from northern Europe with classical music, Branduardi, a trained violinist, has created a distinctive style that's still very popular nowadays. He has worked with many other Italian artists during the years, and his collaboration with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso is noteworthy for prog fans, with Branduardi playing violin on Come in un'ultima cena and translating the lyrics for the English-sung version of that album, As in a last supper , and Banco 's members playing with him on the live Concerto 3-LP box set. Most Branduardi releases are still common to find, but some of these are a bit scarcer in their original issues.

By Massimo Lajolo It is difficult to consider Angelo Branduardi a typical Italian singer of popular music in light of the classical training that culminated in a degree in violin from the Conservatory of Genoa. Indeed, violin is not a typical instrument of pop and rock music, especially not when played by the writer and performer of such songs. In an interview, he declared that these two instruments actually complement one another: the violin as male and the guitar as female. Over the years, both in live and recorded performances, he played many other instruments as well: dulcimer, piano, flute, panpipes, saxophone, harmonica. He is truly a multi-instrumentalist.
Nice little folk record. A soft side of prog-folk, or even Italian prog, this one won't struck you as a very complex or technical or even daring or such similar nonsense, but it might haunt you for Branduardi's calm, declamative voice, concise and charming musical ideas and above all, the lyrics: it's nice to recognize Branduardi's philosophical approach - for example in a tune that tells a story about an old and tired man taking a nap under the tree, while on the other side of tree there was a butterfly, also sleeping. During their sleep, the old man was dreaming he was a butterfly, and a butterfly was dreaming he was an old men. A pure zen. That might be a problem - if you're not abble to appreciate the lyrics, you'll be missing a lot - a mystical, numerlogical, almost alchemical 'La serie dei numeri' and simple and incredible 'Alla fiera dell'est' , which is, actually, exploating an old form of the poem or a story, often present in European folklore s : a mouse, a cat that ate the mouse, a dog that attacked a cat, a man that beaten a dog, a weapon that wounded a man.. The music is mostly acoustic folk with renaissance overtones and prog rock ornaments. A fine little Italian prog folk album.
