Braveheart is a American epic war film directed, co-produced, and starring Mel Gibson , who portrays William Wallace , a lateth-century Scottish warrior. Despite initially declining, Gibson eventually decided to direct the film, as well as star as Wallace. Released on May 26, , Braveheart received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances, directing, production values, battle sequences, and musical score; but criticized its inaccuracies regarding Wallace's title, love interests, and attire. The film's title is taken from the name of Wallace's famous broadsword , and the movie's final shot is of that sword on the field at Bannockburn. Women are missing or lost in the film. No mothers are present or even mentioned, apart from Murron MacClannough's Catherine McCormack , who has three lines in the film.
