The Italian landscape as narrated by painters in the nineteenth century was defined in the memories and perceptions of twentieth-century observers through emblematic icons that gave expression to formal languages and conceptions of the world that were profoundly different from ours. At first this was an Italy of the sentiments and the heart, painted by artists who were not Italians. An Italy of supernational connotations and a quasi-religious embrace of the mystery of nature, that would regain new force at the end of the century in the solemn and spiritual vision of Giovanni Segantini. In this world of landscape painting, the Macchiaioli in the mid-nineteenth century established a language that was both national and modern in parallel with the most innovative artistic tendencies in Europe. Their language made use of new and faster methods of painting and paid great attention to the phenomenon of light to create a new iconography of the country. It was the encounter between modern life and ancient ways of seeing, between the ephemerality of the image and the classical tradition that gave the Macchiaioli their dynamic force and explains how they were able to establish the basis for a unified figurative language for a nation that was in the process of being born.

His artistic activity begins at a very young age, following his father Francesco, a painter and excellent watercolorist himself. This whirlwind of talent and enthusiasm is sensed by Paride Castellan, a Friuli native painter, who lived in Florence until his death. Castellan gives Dario also the chance to meet the painter Pietro Annigoni, to whom he was a friend; the latter turns out to be very helpful in addressing the young Delpin toward a fascinating artistic expression: the fresco. With this technique, Delpin paints various works, also for commission. The encounter with the great poet from Grado has something magical and sees an immediate understanding between the two. The enchantment comes from the calm waters of the lagoon which is the common denominator of their works.
