By James Martin. Venice and Florence, two of Italy's "big three" art cities, are joined by fast and efficient rail service , as well as a fast toll road called the autostrada. The distance between Venice and Florence is about kilometers or about miles. Stop at Popular Cities Along the Route The route between the two cities is an interesting one; it takes you through some very compelling cities you might want to visit. If you had only a week or two to see a bit of Italy, you might want to concentrate on the cities along this route as they represent the best big cities of the Veneto , Emilia-Romagna , and Tuscany areas. It is more efficient than flying when you consider the train's city-center to city-center service.
Our upcoming trip to Italy will include 9 nights in Fiesole thanks to guidance from this forum , but we are thinking of spending 2 nights in Venice Canareggio. We will have a rental car for the duration of our trip. My question is ; would we be better off driving Fiesole to Venice or taking the train? My wife and I do enjoy road trips so I don't mind the driving if the scenery along the way is nice. Thanks for any advice. Also consider that you obviously do not need a car in Venice. If you take The old section, called "Panoramica" there are less tunnels, more viaducts and zero trucks.

We will have a rental car for Chianti, and then we are going to Venice. The question is whether to drive to Venice and drop off car, or drop off car at Florence airport, bus to train station, and take train to Venice. Thoughts or suggestions? I would take the train; they leave every hour and take 2 hours. The 2nd class ticket is 43,00 Euro; you can get a "Mini" fare of 30,00 Euro if you purchase by midnight the night before, AND if they still have any of those fares left.
