Spartacus: Blood and Sand is the first season of American television series Spartacus , which premiered on Starz on January 22, The series was inspired by the historical figure of Spartacus played by Andy Whitfield , a Thracian gladiator who from 73 to 71 BC led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Executive producers Steven S. DeKnight and Robert Tapert focused on structuring the events of Spartacus' obscure early life leading up to the beginning of historical records. The program is preceded by a warning that it purports to portray a "historical portrayal of ancient Roman society that contains graphic violence and adult content".

Spartacus gets his revenge! We leave the treacherous confines of Batiatus' Ludus behind with the knowledge that the evils we have seen throughout the season have been avenged. In brilliant fashion, Spartacus and the slaves of Batiatus win their freedom through bloodshed and they honor those who have died due to the deceitfulness of their Dominus and Domina. There was some great storytelling that went into the lead up for the Crixus versus Spartacus match. Since the episode opened with that match, I had assumed that the two were already working together; that was not the case however. Through flashbacks to the two days prior, the story establishes a reason for Crixus to actually want to defeat Spartacus in their match. With Doctore elevated in rank, Crixus would have Naevia returned to him.
It is here, finally, that Spartacus learns patience. The opening is a mirror of the beginning of the pilot , starting with a fight in the arena before cutting to Solonius, chained below and clad only in a loincloth, listening to the roar of the crowd and watching as sand falls down between the floorboards. Whereas Spartacus sat in isolation however, Solonius is taunted by the gloating Batiatus, and unlike Spartacus, Solonius is fully aware of what lies ahead for him. Each of these moments lends this episode weight and a sense of its place in the season. With his final breaths, Solonius becomes an audience surrogate.
I understand where the critics are coming from — particularly as it took a few episodes for the fine storytelling, outstanding action, and performances John Hannah as Batiatus and Lucy Lawless as Lucretia particularly stand out, but the rest of the mostly unknown cast in the states is all around good to overtake its more "out there" sensibilities. But for those who hung in there, I believe it was well worth the time invested. I was thinking about this during the opening scene of "Kill Them All," as all the careful plotting of the first season came together: Batiatus exultant under the hard fought and brutally obtained patronage of Claudius Glaber Craig Parker , Spartacus Andy Whitfield and his loyal gladiators eyeing the guards while waiting to pounce, and the announcement of a final showdown between bitter gladiatorial enemies Spartacus and Crixus Manu Bennett. Lucretia had a role, we learn, in pairing Crixus and Spartacus in a final showdown. Whereas in the past she sought to bring down the upstart Spartacus, now it is vengeance she seeks in seeing Crixus dead for having an affair with her slave, Naevia Lesley-Ann Brandt. The pot stirs in other directions as well as Spartacus works to bring the majority of slaves at the ludus around to his plot, including Mira Katrina Law , whom he needs to get the gate open at a crucial time.
It is the thirteenth episode of the Spartacus series overall. Spartacus requests permission to work on the palus. He is considered and approved by the guards. There he speaks with the German brothers, Duro and Agron , who tell him that Hamilcar is with them, but most of the gladiators are with Crixus. Spartacus wants to get Crixus' support. Meanwhile, Doctore requests a meeting with Batiatus in private, and tells him that the Gladiators suffer at the hands Glaber's men.
