Lewis Carroll's books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass had only a few adaptations before this movie; this adaptation solved the problems of the setting by using animation the next adaptation wouldn't come until , two decades later. Made under the supervision of Walt Disney himself, this film and its animation are often regarded as some of the finest work in Disney studio history, despite the lackluster, even hostile, reviews it originally received, especially in the UK. Even those that have made the film, including Walt Disney himself, didn't like the film, though it did receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

From the early s on, the Disney cartoons developed a distinct and marked animation style, partly dictated by the demands of the animation medium: clear-cut, caricature-like characters, evenly coloured areas and black contours. When one has to draw and colour manually 24 images for a second of film, this is the easiest way to do it; and Walt Disney refined the drawing process to an industry, even planning his studio buildings in Burbank so that the movie in preparation could proceed as if on a conveyor belt. He was the Henry Ford of animated films. Of course, one might suspect that industrial processing is prone to killing creativity, but in the case of the Disney studio, the rationalized and effortless production process left room for story-development and experimentation.
It fascinated me the first time I read it as a schoolboy, and as soon as I possibly could, after I started making animated cartoons, I acquired the film rights to it. Walt Disney loved the Alice books, probably because Lewis Carroll appreciated childhood, with which Disney totally agreed. He also once said:. They forget. They patronise, they treat children as inferiors. They were about a real girl named Alice, who walked around in a drawn world.
