The Australian director manages to combine an exciting mix of original Shakespearean dialect and Hollywood action, which together delivers a brilliant new concept to film making. The casting of Leonardo Di Caprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet are inspired choices, as they both give the best performance of their fledgling careers. Although this is a story which has been told many times before, Luhrmann keeps the idea fresh, mainly by using a lovely mixture of fast editing and beautifully choreographed fight scenes, which wouldn't look out of place in a John Woo action film.

A bare screen with a lone TV set in the middle. A brave opening for a movie. But this is a brave movie.

No dis intended. The laughter comes from delight and awe at how well DiCaprio and Danes pull off the trick. These babes from the TV woods — he started in Growing Pains; she emerged in My So—Called Life — fill their classic roles with vital passion, speak the Elizabethan verse with unforced grace, find the spirited comedy of the play without losing its tragic fervor and keep their balance when the audacious Australian director Baz Luhrmann Strictly Ballroom hurls them into a whirlwind of hardball action, rowdy humor and rapturous romance. No dialogue, just gunshots, as two gang families — the Montagues and the Capulets each has its name in lights on the roof of a high-rise — go to war. Welcome to mythical Verona Beach, where the gangs fire on each other, and soldiers in choppers fire on them.

Set in the gangs and gun culture of Verona Beach, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival corporate dynasties with generations of hatred behind them. At a party thrown by the Capulets, their teenage children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, meet and quickly fall in love. They race towards a secret marriage, and when it seems that there may be some hope to bring the two warring sides together, events take a tragic turn. Although Luhrmann courageously sticks with the prose, it's spoken as a language. It works, as there is the unwritten assumption that the audience are already familiar with the text and if not, will get the gist of it. This leaves Luhrmann free to stun his audience with the visuals. The film is beautifully shot with vivid and bizarre sets.

Romeo + Juliet at 20: Baz Luhrmann's adaptation refuses to age

T he millennial division of the internet subsists on a fairly shallow pool of nostalgia: endless posts celebrating variously unremarkable anniversaries, all intended to make reasonably young people feel reasonably old. Why am I surprised, though? I say that with equal parts critical admiration and peer adoration. That still-immaculate, all-bases-covered soundtrack — Radiohead! The Cardigans! Er, Butthole Surfers! Detachable angel wings became a default prom accessory; blue-tinted fairy lights were resourcefully draped over household fish tanks.

Predominant figures commit murder, aggravated assault, and glamorize violence through the use of decorative, threatening weaponry and fashion.

The extravagantly mounted adaptation of Shakespeare's doomed romance remains as youthful and effervescent as ever.
